What is a file?

A file is a digital file such as an image, PDF, video. Files are used in an application to serve on a webpage of use in a mobile application.

Why do I need to upload a file to a server?

In order to use a file on a web page or in a mobile application the file needs to be uploaded to a server that is publicly accessible via the internet (i.e. a web server)

Once the file is uploaded to a web-server, it can then be accessed via its URL.

What type of files should I upload to a web-server?

Before anything is uploaded to a web-server there are some important considerations that are mentioned below.

  • There are certain kinds of documents that shouldn’t be served because they contain sensitive data. For example documents containing social security numbers, credit card numbers, or other sensitive or private data should never be placed online.
  • There are some files shouldn’t be uploaded because they are too large. Think about the file size before uploading it for use on a website or mobile application. 
  • There are certain types of documents that can’t be served. The list of some common file extensions that are safe for use on the internet:

.pdf (Portable Document Format)

.txt (Text file)

.rss (RSS file)

.zip (A compressed archive)

.jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp, .jpeg(image files)

.mov,.wmv,.mp4,.avi,.mpg,.swf,.fla(movie files)

.mp3,.wav(audio files)
